Hello, everyone!
In this opportunity,
and as a second post, I am going to explain you how to use there is and there are properly. These expressions are used to indicate that something, a
person or an object, exists. Also, they are used to point out that a person or
an object remains in a specific place.
We use there is
when the subject is singular. For instance:
There is a box
beneath that monument.
We use there
are when the subject is plural. For instance:
There are three
dogs walking across the backyard.
For its
negative form, we just need to add the particle not in the end. For instance:
There is not a box beneath that monument.
There are not
three dogs walking across the backyard. You lied.
As regards
questions, we just need to invert the order of the words. For instance:
Is there any
bottle of water? We will be thirsty after the trip.
Are there only
three cities on the map?
Ok, I think you are ready to practice a bit. In the
following links, you will find some exercises in which you have to use what you
just learnt about the use of there is and there are. Furthermore, in the same
page, you can develop some exercises that are related to description of places.
